Diamond Evaluation Criteria

What are the"4C" criteria?

CaratCarat

A diamond's carats are determined by its weight: 1ct = 0.2g. Since the rarity and value of diamonds depend on the size of the rough gemstone, even if the weight is the same, a single large diamond is worth many times more than the sum of several diamonds. However, the evaluation is not based on a simple "bigger is better" scale but results from the conjunction with the other 4C criteria.

ColourColour

The colour category of a diamond is determined by its degree of "colour" (colourlessness). There are 23 possible ranks, the highest being "D," the first letter of the word "Diamond." The closer the gem is to colourlessness, the higher the evaluation; as the rank decreases, the yellow hue in the gem becomes more intense.
*During a diamond's crafting process, other components may affect the carbon atoms, resulting in a variety of colours: such "coloured diamonds" may gain remarkable rarity and value, depending on the final colour.

ClarityClarity

The "clarity" criteria judges a diamond's transparency. It measures the size, number, and nature of inclusions, cracks and fissures that affect a diamond's appearance. The size, number, nature, shape, and location of inclusions, cracks, and fissures examined under 10x magnification and rated on a scale of 11.

CutCut

A diamond's "cut" refers to the "polishing technique" of the crafting. Unlike the other 4C criteria, the cut is not based on the value of the rough gemstone but on the craftsman's skill. A diamond's brilliance is further enhanced by its shape, determined through calculations based on optical science. The evaluation of the cut is determined by the "proportion factor," "finish factor" (symmetry) and the "polish," rated mainly on a scale of 5.

Learn About Market Prices and Valuation! Diamond Selling Price FAQ

Is it possible to sell old or antique diamonds?

Yes, one of our target areas is old and antique diamonds. However, our appraisals are based on modern criteria, so the assessment of quality and selling price may differ from the original purchase price of the diamond.

Can I sell a diamond even without a certificate of authenticity?

Yes, it is possible to sell diamonds even without a certificate of authenticity. Our appraisal staff will confirm the quality of your diamond and offer you a corresponding selling price.

Is there anything I should bring with me when visiting for an appraisal?

If you still have a professional’s written appraisal for the piece you want to sell, please bring it. If you have a written appraisal, the 4 C’s used to assess diamonds, as well as with the grade will be included—having that information available will allow us to complete the appraisal in a timely manner.

What is the term “LDH” that I found in my diamond’s written appraisal?

“LDH” is an acronym that stands for Laser Drill Hole. This is a diamond repair technique that entails drilling a minuscule hole on the surface or into the interior of a diamond so that acid or other solutions may be poured in to erase scratch marks. The mention of this term in your appraisal indicates that this procedure has been carried out on your diamond.

What are the 4 C’s?

The 4 C’s stand for Carat, Cut, Colour and Clarity, four criteria that are used to assess the quality of a diamond.

Is it possible to get an estimate for a selling price over the phone (if I want to get an idea of the carat count, etc)?

Even if you are only looking for a rough estimate of a diamond’s carat count, it would be difficult to determine the quality of a diamond without seeing it in person, so we are unable to provide this service at the moment. However, we are able to provide assessments of quality that include carat counts as well as selling prices to our customers who visit us in person, so please consider visiting an ALLU location for an assessment.

If I tell you the size of my diamond in millimetres, can you tell me the carat count?

Because a diamond’s carat value is calculated by weight, not size, we would be unable to inform you of its carat count based solely on its size in millimetres. If you visit us in person, we can tell you the carat value and an assortment of other information included in our appraisal, so please consider visiting an ALLU location.

What are melee/pavé diamonds?

Melee or pavé is a term ascribed to diamonds with a measure of less than 0.1 ct. At ALLU, we welcome jewellery featuring pavé diamonds, so if you have any such pieces, please consider bringing them in.

Do you buy loose diamonds?

Yes, loose diamonds are one of our target areas at ALLU, so please bring them in.

What items can I sell for a high price?

ALLU offers premium selling prices for diamonds, especially those with a high 4C grade. As for jewellery, we buy gemstones, accent stones, accessories, and bullion and will provide detailed assessments for each item category.

Does the strength of the yen affect selling prices?

Because many diamonds and gemstones are imported from outside of Japan, foreign exchange rates do influence our selling prices. In the case of a weak yen, market prices and pre-owned market prices will increase, leading to increased selling prices at ALLU.

I have a diamond necklace made of gold—would you also offer appraisals for the gold necklace part and not just the diamond?

Yes, we will take into account the various parts of any item, both precious metals and gemstones, and offer a selling price based on the values of every component.

Can I get an appraisal for my diamond via WhatsApp?

Yes, if you would like an appraisal for your diamond via WhatsApp, please send us a picture of your diamond as well as a picture of its written appraisal document. We will reply with a rough estimate for your diamond.

In what ways can I sell my diamonds?

We offer several appraisal options when buying customers’ diamonds: we conduct in-person appraisals at our stores, as well as appraisals by mail and even can send representatives from ALLU to conduct an appraisal at locations other than our stores, so please feel free to utilise these various options. ※ Please understand that diamond appraisal via online video calls are unavailable due to the difficulty of assessing the quality of a diamond without being able to see it in person.
