Rolex, the historical pioneer of timepiece technology, developed its first original chronograph mechanism in the 1930s. Five years later, in 1935, Sir Malcolm Campbell wore the very same Chronograph while piloting the racing car “Bluebird” in the historical breakthrough of the 300 mph (484 km/h) wall. The “Daytona” was born from this legendary feat, with the addition of a tachymeter bezel, a model specially developed for professional racers. The name comes from the tests it underwent at the Daytona International Speedway, home of the famous 24-hour endurance car race.

Rolex released the first mode in 1963, while the most popular models in the market, such as Ref.6263 and Ref.6265, were first introduced in the 1970s. The Ref.6263 is characterised by its plastic bezel and the exotic dial of the “Paul Newman” model, named after the famous racing star who favoured it, a timepiece coveted by fans all over the globe. The Ref. 6265, on the other hand, featured screw-down buttons as pushable buttons and added the water-proof Oyster case, making the “Daytona” a collection of stable popularity to this day.

The model currently produced is the “Daytona” Ref.116520: equipped with the Caliber 4130, a movement crafted by Rolex in-house. Are there any especially valuable Daytona watches?

The rarity of a Daytona watch depends on when it was manufactured. This is true even within the same model number. For example, among the Ref. 16520 models — manufactured from 1988 to 2000 — the R, L, A and P models are known as especially rare. Other examples are the cream dials (ivory dials) that only existed in Ref. 116520 models manufactured between 2000 and 2016, formed via natural ageing. For an older example, the Ref. 6240 — manufactured between the late 1960s and 1970s — with its ‘exotic dial’ (also known as the Paul Newman Daytona), which had a second rack on the outer circumference of the dial and an in-dial with the inverted colour of the main dial.
